Avoid this pitfall when buying a car?

I am reading an article that says:

” you must avoid the common and costly pitfalls of car buying. Here are some points to ponder before you purchase:
Don’t give the dealer your license or social security number. ”

Why not? wouldn’t they want to check credit to see how much you qaulify for or something? What is the differnce between giving it to them before, or at the time you decide?
and how do you say no tactfully if they ask?

  1. I can tell you that giving them your license BEFORE you agree on a deal will often be a problem if you decide to leave They don’t want you to leave, so they will delay returning it to you so they can apply more pressure.

They tried this on ME once, and I said OK, I’m walking to my car now, and if I don’t have that license in my hand when I get there, my attorney will be contacting you with a summons. They suddenly “found ” it and returned it.

DO NOT give it up until you have decided you want to deal with them. If they DEMAND it, walk away.

ALSO, lets say you go to 5 different dealers before buying, and each one checks your rating. EACH time your credit is checked, your # goes down a little.
